Follow up on Meeting Children’s Workers this Sunday
We had a productive meeting with over 10 in attendance. We discussed expanding into more groups in order to better serve the different needs of children. Donna Masson will look into starting a ministry for the 3-5 year olds. Evie will continue to serve ages 6-9, and Byron and Chrystal hope to train the older kids (10-12) to invest in the younger kids through puppets and other ways. During children’s church (main service) we plan to allow the ‘older’ kids to do that. We are also looking for adults who could do a 10 minute segment during the 35 minute children church – it could be doing a craft, acting out a biblical character, giving a short bible message or using other gifts you may have. We plan to use the 3rd Sunday of each month for a special children’s moment in the service. Chris Carr is looking for ways to implement praise moves for children. Update visit to Little Rock Arkansile regarding Men’s Ministry
Al and Marco had a great visit. Kevin Hughes will speak to us at the upcoming Men’s Weekend at the 3 Hill Motel. Next to sharing with us from Gods Word, he will also give us a firsthand overview of this ministry and how it can be implemented in our area. We plan to use that weekend to pray and plan toward starting a Men’s Ministry in the fall of 2012. Kevin serves as associate pastor at First Evangelical Free in St. Louis as well as the regional representative of Men’s Fraternity and the 33 Series.
Retreat Date: May 18,19, starting at 6.00 pm and ending May 19 at 2.00 pm.

We look forward to have Dan Judge with us this Sunday. Dan was interim pastor in 2000 when Covenant Bible Church first started, and currently resides in Wyoming, where he serves as a counselor. Dan and his wife Diane have three grown kids.

Follow up on ‘Together’ – our time of corporate prayer and fasting:
This email contains some important updates that came out of this time:

I. Knowing God - Growing Deeper into God’s Word

In order to facilitate more time for study of the word, time for fellowship/greeting visitors in between services, and the opportunity to get out a little earlier on Sunday, a proposal has been made to change our service times to: 9.30 – 10.30 for Sunday School and 10.45 – 12.00 for the service. This proposal is not set in stone, so give us your input! Please see any of the elders or pastor with your ideas. We’d like to initiate this March 11th.

Upcoming Sermon Series and Small Group Involvement

Starting March 11: Experiencing God; a sermon series and small group curriculum based on the familiar series by Henry Blackaby.
Summer: The 10 Commandments – a ‘backstage’ look at the heart of each commandment and how it affects our lives. ‘his commandments are not burdensome’
Upon everyone’s return from summer, we’d like to have a church wide ‘walk through the Bible’ – a chronological walk through the Bible for all ages starting in the fall of 2012.

II. Grow Together

a. Small Group
We grow in Christ together. Don’t miss this chance to sign up for small group! You signing up for small group will help us determine how to organize our small groups in size, number and location. A sign up sheet is available in the back of the church sanctuary. We’d like to start Sunday, March 11th.

b. Children and Families:
A meeting will be held this Sunday immediately following the service for all interested in children ministry at Covenant. We will be looking at how to expand and improve current children’s church and Sunday School as well as incorporating youth and children in our services. All are welcome to attend.

c. Men’s Ministry
Men: Mark your calendars – Men’s Weekend at the 3 Hill Motel: May 18 @ 6.00 pm; until May 19 @ 2.00 pm. Guest Speaker: Kevin Hughes from First Evangelical Free in St. Louis. Additional (optional) recreational activities for Saturday may be included.

III. Show the World
You may have noticed that we added an extra row of chairs in the back. Did you know that it is very welcoming to first time visitors when they don’t have to look for a seat – and especially don’t have to resort to that ‘scary’ front row as the other seats are taken? We would ask our CBC family to keep the last two rows free for visitors. Let’s make it easy for people to make CBC their home!

Vision building trip: Al Gainer, Marco and possibly some other(s) will visit Little Rock, AR this Tuesday and Wednesday to observe a men’s ministry there that serves 800 men on a weekly basis. They will also spend time with leaders exploring community transformation and city wide unity that has been at the core of what God has been doing in this community. Your prayers for traveling mercy and insight and relationship building during this time would be much appreciated. We are praying for a regular, weekly men’s ministry to start here in the fall of 2012.

Dear friends at CBC,

“Resist the devil and he will flee from you” -James 4:7
I went for a walk with a friend on the trail in the woods behind the church today. A neighbor’s dog came by and decided we were barking material. I clapped my hands as loud as I could and told him in a loud voice to ‘go home’, which he did. It reminded me of the spiritual battle we are all in. Did you know that God’s promise for you in Christ Jesus includes seeing the devil ‘flee from you’? Come and find out this Sunday how to follow in Jesus’ footsteps of whom it was said after three temptations: ‘When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time’ (Luke 4:13 - NASB).

Dear friends at CBC,

“Thank you for coming. We enjoy watching the smiling faces of our residents as they participate in your program tonight. This is wonderful to see and gives us such a good feeling’. These were some of the comments from the St. Francois Manor management this past weekend during the Alpha Course. Our friends from the Bridge sent me this email of which I will give you an excerpt: “Wow – Alpha was wonderful. What a fantastic start! Thank you for the radical hospitality. I would say that being met in the parking lot, shown a parking spot right in front, ushered in personally to our reserved tables, and enjoying a wonderful dinner that we did not prepare is pretty radical and a great evening focused on Jesus!. Being able to bring our group and have our cell sit with and nurture them, and soak in the wonderful teaching was just beyond words. One of the guys had a burning question when we took him back – ‘why did it have to happen this way? I don’t understand why Jesus had to die’. I gave him the short answer, then told him that I thought that is what next week’s talk is about and he was clearly enthused…..’

Sometimes we hear people call the church ‘a bunch of hypocrites’, but as I got to watch you all love, reach out and share your lives with our friends at the St. Francois Manor along with the CSC residents that the Bridge brought in, I saw the opposite. Christ’s love was given hands and feet – through you! A big thank you to all of you for simply coming – giving a valuable gift of yourself – your time. Thanks for bringing pies, cakes, your smile, bibles, your prayers and your love. It made a lifelong and eternal impression. As we look at Valentine Day coming up next week, I think we’ve had our own Valentine Day already!

This Sunday we will continue studying the temptation of Jesus in the desert. We will talk about the temptation to Self-Reliance. “Throw yourself down this temple….shouldn’t angels come to scoop you up?” I plan to give it a Valentine twist. Look forward to see you this Sunday!

Follow Up on ‘Together’ - Sunday School Feb. 12
It was exciting to see Gods Hand at work in our time of fasting and prayer together during the weekend of January 27 & 28. We want to give everybody who wasn’t able to join us this weekend a chance to hear (1) a report of what happened during our time and (2) to give your feedback, using the same questions we used this past weekend. We will use our Sunday School time this Sunday for this. I have pasted the questions below.

I enjoyed our time of being ‘together’ - fasting and prayer this weekend. What a privilege to see Gods Hand at work in our midst as we seek Him together. We want to give everybody who wasn’t able to join us this weekend a chance to hear (1) a report of what happened during our time and (2) to give your feedback, using the same questions we used this past weekend. Alpha Update
We have been given the opportunity to hold The Alpha Course at the St. Francois Manor. Therefore it will NOT take place at Covenant Bible Church, but we will join our friends at the St. Francois Manor, 1180 Old Jackson Road, for the next 10 Wednesdays. The time is still 6 p.m. and format of the evening will be very similar to last year. Cost for each meal is only $2/person, which we ask each participant to contribute. We do plan to bring deserts each evening, and starting this Sunday, Linda Davis will ask individuals to help provide that. We will end our course with the Manor putting on a special ‘Christmas like’ meal just to say ‘thank you’ to us, this at no cost to us. Because of the much lower cost, we will not be taking up an offering for Alpha this Sunday. But there may be some minor costs, as we have been asked to help supplement things like paper ware, etc…so we ask you instead to contribute generously this month to our regular CBC offering by using the box in the back of the church. Any expenses for Alpha will be taken out of that. If you want to serve Alpha in any way, please contact Marco, as we are still looking for help with table hosts, mingling with residents, distributing and cleaning up trays and food, etc...

Local Missions:
THANK YOU to those who helped Dana, a friend of CBC obtain 20 hours practice driving her car. She could still use help. Idea: when you have errands to run, you could allow her to drive you. Call Naomi at 756 0182/747 6882 or Dana at 701 0458 to sign up.

Superbowl Party:
Our Superbowl Party will take place Sunday, February 12 at 5.00 p.m. at the house of Mike & Darlene Berg, 1119 Old Logging Road, Doe Run. Bring yourself, some good snacks and get ready for some good fun and fellowship. Actual game starts at 5.30.

Dear friends at CBC,

I look very much forward to spending time in prayer and fasting with you this weekend. When we look at 2012, where else would we want to be than at the feet of the Savior? What other place is there to go? May He lead us together, as a team, in all that He has for us at Covenant Bible Church. And for your convenience I have listed the details of our time below.
For this Sunday: Have you ever wondered why life’s trials seem to follow close encounters with God almost immediately? You are encouraged with something from God, and then it seems like something happens that is designed to ‘snuff it out’ almost immediately. Christ’s life was no different. After God showed incredible favor on Christ with his baptism, visible words of affirmation and the filling with the Sprit, he was ‘led into the wilderness’. Come this Sunday to find out why these obstacles aren’t only normal, but necessary for us to gain a perspective of what He wants to do in and through us.

Dear friends at CBC,

“If my people, who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place” – 2 Chronicles 7:14, 15.
What an excellent invitation for us to come together and pray! This promise is given to Solomon after the dedication of the temple and emphasizes God’s faithfulness – what He will do – when his people come to pray in the temple. The same God waits for us this weekend. I hope to see you! I would encourage everyone to be there for the entire time as much as possible, but if your schedule is busy, please join us for part of it. You are encouraged to fast on Friday. I’m encouraged by those that have already begun to fast. This Sunday’s message will build on our weekend together. Can’t wait to see what God will do. Look forward to it!

This Sunday we will continue our series ‘Together’ by looking at ‘together we receive’, as we prepare for our church wide time of seeking God on January 20 & 21. Byron, who just had a cochlear implant activated for his ear, has given me permission to share this email he sent me earlier this week:

I had an absolutely awesome time at church yesterday. From the time I walked into church, I was able to carry on conversations with several people. The most exciting part came during worship. For the first time, I could hear the harmonious voices of our church family. Thought I was in the midst of a choir. I could hear all 3 instruments, your guitar was awesome, and Kari on the tambourine, I could hear it like never before. I was in tears, and it was an absolutely life altering worship experience for me. Your sermon, I usually get about 35%. Yesterday, I heard and understood every word. It blew me away. I so much appreciate all the support and encouragement from everyone. Life can only get sweeter. I know I have been given an awesome gift, and I am forever grateful to my Loving God for His graciousness. It is truly Amazing Grace.

‘Together’ - Time of seeking God as a church body.
Friday, January 20 from 6.30 – 8.30 p.m.
Saturday, January 21 from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
In order to light the schedule load for everybody, we will only have prayer (no Bible Study) on Wednesday nights Jan 18 and 25. There will also be no Sunday School or Small Group on Sunday January 22nd.
We encourage you to fast for this time on Friday, by choosing your own form of fasting. A sandwich lunch will be provided on Saturday.

Alpha Course to start Feb 8th
The Alpha Course is scheduled to start Wednesday, February 8th. Look for invitations to hand out to be available this Sunday.
A special offering will be held on Sunday, January 29 to help cover the cost of meals. It is our goal to raise between $1,000 and 1,500.

Report Annual Meeting January 8.
Donna Masson shared our financial report. Gwen Slater gave an update on missions. Al Gainer was voted in as elder. Bud & Donna Masson and Bill Bratberg were voted in as deacons. Mark Carr was thanked for his years serving as elder and deacon. Details on the upcoming ‘Together’ prayer summit were given and a discussion was held on how to invite folks for the Alpha Course.

Dear friends at CBC,

“Together” can be synonymous with unstoppable. The world says that happens because you now have a common goal. Although there is a truth to that, the Bible speaks about a much greater impact. It speaks of being united with one another in Christ. Unity then becomes a place to stand together in the Presence of the Almighty God and watch Him work. Together becomes a key to unlock heaven’s riches. The book of Acts shows us lots of examples of this. This Sunday we will continue our series ‘Together’ as we prepare for our church wide time of seeking God January 20 &21, by looking at ‘together we stand’

What a joy and privilege to celebrate the birth of our Savior together this weekend! It was wonderful to sense the Lord’s presence in both the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day service and a joy to welcome so many in both services. A big thank you to all who made this possible – from your help with decorations, special music, puppets, children, poetry, transportation, media presentations to bringing your friends and family. This would not have been possible without all of us coming together in serving Him. Thank you!
I look forward to serving the Lord with you in the New Year. This Sunday we will start with a new 3 week series called: ‘Together’. It’ll be based on the words ‘together’ in the book of Acts, and will prepare our hearts for a unique time of seeking God ‘together’ as a church body later in the month of January. The next three Sundays are designed to explain more about our intention and purpose for this time.

Dear friends at CBC,

I look forward to our Christmas Celebrations this weekend!
Saturday evening will be a candle light service with a creative video Gospel presentation by sand artist Joe Castillo, poems by our very own artist Darlene Berg and your favorite Christmas Songs.
Sunday Morning at 11 the children will make a presentation, special music will be brought to us by Wanda Pruett and Byron and Chrystal Huebschen will bring their puppets. The sermon will present the Gospel for young and old, churched and un-churched.
So bring a friend along your side this weekend. Both services will be ‘kid –friendly’. Let’s pray that the Lord will reveal Himself to many this weekend as Emmanuel: God with us!

Christmas Outreach
A big thank you for all of you who provided help with the Christmas food care packages that were delivered this Wednesday. It was wonderful to see the smiles (and tears) on the faces of folks as we delivered the gifts.
The residents of St. Francois Manor also really enjoyed their gifts this past Friday. Here’s a report: It was neat because... people would pass over certain gifts and choose a different item. Later others were delighted - big smiles- with the gifts not previously chosen. When we left so many voices called out goodbye, thank you, and merry Christmas. We said "thank you, God!" for all His attention to the smallest of details: the largest of issues!

I knew I was seriously in love with Kari because I missed her like crazy when she was not with me. I still remember the long-distance phone calls between continents during our engagement time. I remember the place where I sat and how it felt to hear her voice. I wanted to be with her! God only gives us two names when describing the coming of the Messiah in Matthew 1. Last week we talked about “Savior”. This Sunday we will talk about: “Emmanuel, God is with us”. What does it mean to have ‘God with you’? How can you experience this as you go through daily life? It’s a treasure to unlock. Let’s prepare our hearts this Sunday to welcome the Savior in a fresh way this Christmas Season as we continue to look at His Name: GOD WITH US!

“Who gets to be the boss?” In our ‘Love on the Rock(s)’ series I have saved the toughest subject for last: Submission. It creates controversy. Some may call it outdated or an invitation to (male?) abuse. Yet as I studied biblical submission I have found that it holds a jewel and is a key to healthy relationships. Let’s unlock that jewel together this Sunday as we marvel how the Wisdom of God outsmarts the wisdom of man – once again!

Dear friends at CBC,

If you were to ask me to list the top three subjects the world seems to give a lot of attention to while the church may not, I’d have to think that sexuality would be among them. Couple that with the fact that research shows that sex, just like money, is a major contributor to marriage and relationship conflicts. Yet the Bible isn’t silent about it at all. The Songs of Solomon champions its beauty freely while 1 and 2 Corinthians warn against it’s abuse strongly. Is there a conflict? Maybe satan, in all his craftiness, has taken something beautiful and made it perverse. Maybe he is so adamant about it because it shows the Fathers Love to us in a unique and powerful way – and opens a door for us to love each other in a similar fashion. I’d say it’s time to break some of the lies surrounding this topic, and be mesmerized not by satan’s perversion but by God’s redemption. Come and find out how this Sunday.

Dear friends at CBC,

Money, and the way we deal with it, is once again in the news. One of the cries of the growing ‘occupy Wall Street’ movement is against corporate greed. Libya’s Gadaffi gained millions of dollars in his lifetime and had golden sculptures in his palaces, but at the end of his life couldn’t take any of it with him. It is said that money is one of the top three leading factors to marriage conflict. Jesus devoted much of his teaching to our dealing with money. As we continue our series on relationships, we’ll take a look at how money affects relationships and how we can deal with it rightly.

Dear friends at CBC,

It was our first year of marriage. We inherited this ‘home’ that used to be a chicken shed (no joke!). As a brand new husband I tried to prove my love to my new bride by carrying in loads of new wall sheeting, making the walls of our new ‘home’ even better. Little did I realize that I missed the love mark completely. I finally did so when I saw her tears. Love is only known when it is demonstrated in the right way. And that is where the challenge lays. How do you show love in a way that is understood? Come and find out this Sunday why I am still married after this episode and how you can improve on the art of loving people, whether in marriage or any relationship.

Marco attending Evangelical Free Conference & City Transformation visit

Marco and Kari will be attending the Central District Evangelical Free Conference, leaving Sunday afternoon and returning Wednesday. Next to the Conference, they will also make a field visit to Branson to study how churches and community leaders have united in that community to seek God’s Kingdom for their city.

Upcoming Missions Sundays:

Sunday, October 16 Thom Shook, missionary to Japan and Asia will share with us during our morning service. Sunday, November 13 Bill Younker from the International Community Church in Columbia, MO will do the same. We will have a potluck lunch afterwards for all. Please bring a dish to share. Because of our fellowship time at lunch, we will not have small group both evenings.
